Thankfully for Iggy Azalea, this isn’t the ‘End of An Era.’
Back in 2021, Australian rapper Iggy Azalea announced she would be officially hanging up her microphone. She said that she would continue writing for others under another alias.
“End of an Era” is so special to me because after I drop my album next month, I am going to take a few years to focus on other creative projects and things I’m feeling passionate and inspired by, beyond music. I’m excited for you guys to see different sides to me in the future.”
Iggy Azalea’s commentary back in 2021
Iggy Azalea is a highly decorated artist having multiple top 5 Billboard Hot100 hits, Problem featuring Ariana Grande achieved the #1spot. Her debut album also peaked at #5 on the billboard Hot200 chart.
Iggy is renowned for her artistic choices. unique visuals and high-budget music videos. Throughout her career, she has set herself apart from her rap counterparts visually and sonically. Her videos for ‘Kream’, ‘Savior’, ‘Sally Walker,’ ‘I am the Strip Club’, ‘Lola’ and ‘Sip It’ are just the tip of the iceberg regarding her visual artistry.
Unfortunately, even with all of Iggy’s success she was bombarded with waves of hate and discussed instances of her being allegedly “blackballed.” She has detailed how her music was intentionally overlooked and did not receive any playlist support although a few of her songs were top sellers/streamed songs for that week.
She spoke in detail about how there was too much negative energy tied to the music. But the negativity ranged beyond her music, she couldn’t discuss anything with her fans without it being spun into a racially tinged episode. The industry along with trolls on social media have been trying to make her beef with fellow rapper, Nicki Minaj. But she continued shooting down all negative narratives towards Minaj for years and continues to as recent as 2022.
“A year ago I was willing to walk away from music because I was tired of the negative energy it attracted. But what I’ve learned is that even when I’m minding my business, y’all gonna be negative AND nosey. So if I can’t have peace, neither can you. I’m coming back. Cry about it.”
Iggy has been touring around the US with Pitbull for most of 2022. Each night has been met with rave reviews and sold-out shows. She describes how going on tour reminded her how the hate on the internet is not real.
Iggy detailed how touring with Pitbull resurrected her love for music. She will be releasing new music independently on her own label “Bad Dreams.” She refused to discuss future release dates, creative direction, or any details on her music just yet. Although, she mentioned creating music with Pitbull and possibly already having a song.
With new music on the way and currently performing sold-out shows nightly while on tour with Pitbull she has nothing but positivity ahead. Artists new and seasoned can take an example from Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj on how to overcome mounting pressures to end their career. They both have proven that social media does not represent how people generally feel about an artist. Especially when both have been booked to perform at sold-out tours and festivals worldwide.
