The past year 2022 was a successful one for creatives, hip-hop artists, and female rap in general. Every year at No Ghostwriter, our ritual of introducing rookies we believe will blow up came to fruition for 2022. We predicted several female rappers, and the majority on our list blew up way more than we expected. Our list included Ivorian Doll, Doechii, Kali, Che Noir, and many more.
Ivorian Doll transitioned from her contribution to remixes to stacking up singles, and we thoroughly relished all of them. From heavy-drill track Messy, to a couple more songs like Petty.
She’s one of our favorite “dolls” in Hip-Hop. Doechii released Persuasive, then the remix with SZA followed. Her work ethic and artistry in 2022 were a joy to watch on the fence. But ending the year with Stressed? That wrapped up perfectly for her and activated a need for new music from her growing fanbase.
Now in 2023, we have composed another list with a different lineup of female rappers. We narrowed it down to 10 artists that show great potential. In no particular order, here is our top 10 list:
1. London Hilll
New York native and self-proclaimed “Project Princess” is one female rapper that is so different from her counterparts. Her abrasive lyrics, double entendres, Caribbean accent, and immaculate fashion sense make a memorable impression on her growing audience. London featured on Nicki Minaj and Skeng’s Likkle Miss Fine 9 Remix alongside Spice, Destra, Lady Leshurr, Lisa Mercedez, Patrice Roberts, and Pamputtae.
2. Bree Runway
The Ghanaian descent isn’t just a rapper, but a singer, and songwriter, and signed to EMI records. Her debut mixtape 2000and4Eva in 2018 was a sign she was due to leave a mark on the industry. Last year, she released Somebody Like You, Pressure, and That Girl.
A California native and unique Bbyafricka hypnotized from her offerings with EPs Freak of The Nile and Brain Damage. She describes herself as, “I’m multiple people. I’m just here, I’m the vessel, for literally everything. I have kids, so I’m a vessel for them. My art, what I put out there. All that.”
We knew she was destined to succeed when Saweetie jumped on the remix of “Baby Mama Coochie”.
In 2022, she unleashed The Art of Geekin, a project set on guiding listeners into her way of “geekin” in life. On each song, is a puzzle that fits with other songs like it’s meant to.
Memphis rapper is relatively new to the mainstream. She is known for songs such as “No Capp”, “Too Much Spice”, and “Hell Raiser. In 2022, she was featured on HitKidd’s “Shabooya” with other female rappers Goss Up, and K Carbon. Slimeroni has the potential to blow up under the right marketing wing.
5. K Carbon
Another Memphis native on this list, also exceptionally young is a force in the culture. I love her ever-changing creative mind, and the manner she blends in anywhere with her penmanship. Carbon may be young, but her presence speaks volumes. Her offerings from 2022 include an array of freestyles and feature verses. She gave us Gangsta B!tch, Switch, Carbon Freestyle, and Shabooya.
6. Crae Wolf
MOBO Unsung’s artist is multidimensional, multilingual, and creative. She can ride on each beat offered to her. Last year she hopped on a song with A2E. UK female rap is booming and I’m intrigued by what else these artists bring forth this year.
7. Anele “Ney” Zondo
South African rapper, dabbles in modeling, acting, and presenting as well. She’s the entertainment It Girl. Ney dominated 2022 with brand deals, live shows, and her first project. Her rise to fame occurred when she surprised her audience by breaking out as a female rapper on the hit song Ingwe.
Ney surrounds herself with a great team, and I strongly believe she’s on the right path to stardom.
One of the unique voices in rap Enchanting is dynamite in a small package. She has a way of meshing R&B and Hip-Hop sounds that doesn’t ridicule her as a female rapper. It’s evident in the songs released in 2022, from What I Want with Jacquees, Large Amounts featuring Gucci Mane.
9. Chelsea Pastel
She is a rapper, singer, & producer from Cleveland, OH. The rising star gravitated to music at an early age & her passion for music continued to be nurtured when she enrolled in the Cleveland School Of Arts. Chelsea’s work ethic will contribute to her success in 2023.
10. Buzzi Lee
Last on the list is a South African female rapper, Buzzi Lee. IN 2022 she came swinging appearing on Never Ride remix, Rhulumente remix, and many more. Her confidence translates on her verses. She is one artist I’m looking forward to releasing solo music in 2023.
