In a day and age where the black narrative, and especially the black female narrative, is dictated by the affluent caucasian male; in a day and age where the black woman’s experience is somehow invalidated if she does not turn herself into a sexual object; in a world where “female rap” is being mistaken for nothing more than an aesthetic while true Hip-Hop Heads are begging for the babes that write their own bars to get the credit they deserve, enter Conceited (Remix) featuring Lola Brooke and Maiya the Don.
Conceited (Remix) was released on January 27th, 2023 by RCA, who Milli has been signed to since the end of 2019. The grimy, sultry trap beat that serves as the backbone of the song was produced by Young Fyre (hence the very subtle “That’s Fyre” in the song’s intro), and Milli uses her platform to showcase Artista signed Lola Brooke, and the independent rising star Maiya the Don, who help bring new life to this track.
The original version of Conceited dropped in June of 2022, and, true to Flo Milli fashion, the song is about what she thinks of herself, rather than worrying about what men may or may not think about her.
Flo Milli, Lola Brooke, and Maiya The Don ‘Conceited’ Remix Review
Conceited (Remix) ft. Lola Brooke and Maiya the Don carry on that theme as each woman shares why and how they’re “conceited” over top of a bass-heavy trap beat with an addictive and simple hook.
In this modern age, it’s really easy to confuse vying for attention for cockiness, and vice versa, but there is no question with Conceited (Remix) that this song is about feeling yourself and not begging for external validation.
These three women came together, aiming for the bar that Nicki Minaj helped to redefine in 2022 with Super Freaky Girl (Queen Mix) and Likkle Miss (Fine Nine Remix), and they definitely hit their mark!
These three femme fatales go bar for bar on this track, but here are a few of my favorite highlights:
“Hoes don’t like when I talk like that
Please don’t bark cuz Milli bite back…
…You got money ‘cause you on dicks
Milli got millies ‘cause Milli got hits“
(From Flo Milli’s verse)
“I heard you don’t like me, please don’t sis me
Bitch is you stupid? Stop acting so ditzy.
Two bad bitches, ho is you silly?
Niggas can’t pick between me and Flo Milli.“
(From Lola Brooke’s verse)
“I ain’t one of them hoes that look better in they pictures
Face like a model, body like a stripper…
…He like my hair black, so I went blonde
Whack-ass nigga can’t ever get close to me
Probably OD if he ever got a dose of me“
(From Maiya The Don’s verse)
And the deep, smokey voices of this trio just eat the beat up. There is a surprising amount of flow and switch up from all three of three Queens in a 3-minute and 15-second span of time, and all three verses stay on point.
With every remix, every good artist still runs the risk of that. “Yeah, but… the original track was better,” moment, and this is one of those rare gems that should never have that problem. Conceited was already a glowing reminder to love yourself first and foremost, and this new remix just set it in stone as a monument to girl power.
This is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
Needless to say, I am obsessed with this song and think that you should be too. This isn’t a pop-rap song. It’s not a bop. Yes, it has an unbelievably catchy chorus, but the verses remind us what women are capable of when they sit down with a pen and a beat and are allowed to write freely. This song is everything that hip hop has ever stood for: self-expression, beating the odds, and feeling a little conceited in the process
Now I just want to know when we’ll get a Flo Milli collab with Doechii.
