The female rap game in South Africa is just as potent as other international players. Female Rap did a clean sweep this year alone.
Meet Buzzi Lee and Dee Koala, two of South Africa’s treasures. They integrate their native languages in most of their rap verses, Buzzi using the Tswana language, and Dee with the Xhosa language.
And with the “Rhulumente Remix,” is much more elevated with their offerings. The original song by Greek included Guy Onke and mtshanakamalume and was released late last year.
The remix has 2022’s best feature runners—Maglera Doe Boy, Buzzi Lee, Dee Koala, and Bravo Le Roux.
Dee Koala takes lead as soon as the beat decelerates,
“nditsiba phez’kwe ingathi ndidlala uEle ele
mali ngathi i’Authi ikhup inyuku for imlenze”
She remits the perfect combination of solid enunciation, clean cadence, and playfulness. Her swag on Rhulumente is effortless, and she emulates the beat drop every second. I love the use of Xhosa slang, as it makes her more and more unforgettable in this remix.
Buzzi Lee delivers her own style of rapping in her verse. She commences,
“Buzzi Lee the number one, face card ke 10
tlhahela ka drop top ke slahla madende
di baby o loss o fana le Sechaba ka sphence
grootman onkare ke goal modende”
Her Tswana slang is so raw and formidable. Buzzi bites out each ending word on every bar with concision. You may not understand what she says, but her curtness makes you rap along. She added her own propensity, and it is memorable.
Rhulumente Remix is an exaltation from the original. Buzzi Lee and Dee Koala carried their own.
