As Nicki Minaj embarks on her festival run, fans have been highly anticipating each show and are eager to see the queen get back to the stage. Minaj kicked off the run last week at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, and her next stop will be the Wireless Festival in London this Sunday July 10th.
In her return to the stage at the Essence festival she opened with her two latest singles “Do We Have A Problem?” and “We Go Up,” and went on to perform her well-known hits from “Beez in the Trap” to “Anaconda.” Lil Wayne took the stage as her special guest as they performed their most recent collaboration on “Seeing Green” as well as the classics “High School” and “Truffle Butter.”
What The Barbz want, The Barbz Will Get
However, considering it’s been years since fans have seen Minaj live, there are definitely new hopes and expectations set in place-so what do the Barbz want to see?
More Love to the Queen Era
Minaj released her fourth studio album Queen back in 2018, but due to her lack of touring at the time fans weren’t able to witness this era live. Now is the perfect time for her to show this era the love it deserves by performing fan favorites such as “Barbie Dreams,” “Hard White,” “LLC,” and “Chun Swae.”
Special Guests This year’s Wireless lineup also includes Minaj’s most recent collaborators so fans are hoping to see them join her on stage or perhaps a guest they wouldn’t expect. Whether it’s Bia for “Whole Lotta Money”, Fivio Foreign for “We Go Up,” or Lil Baby for “Do We Have A Problem” & “Bussin,” fans would love to see these recent collabs come to life.
Her Recent Features Although we love to hear the staple Nicki features from back in the day like “BedRock” and “Bottoms Up,” there are more recent features she’s done in the last few years that deserve more recognition on stage. Having a set list including songs such as “No Flag,” “Fendi,” “What That Speed Bout?!,” and “Blick Blick,” mixed in with some of the classics would definitely be iconic.
Getting Back to Her Caribbean Roots Born in Trinidad, Minaj is no stranger to flaunting her Caribbean roots throughout her music. In doing so she has created a list of unforgettable features and hits while also connecting with her fellow Caribbean fanbase. Now would be a great chance to connect with them live whether it’s performing features such as “Letting Go,” “Give It All To Me,” or “Oh Ma Gawd,” to tracks like “Trini Dem Girls,” and “Coco Chanel” featuring Foxy Brown-which would be a great chance for the two to reunite on stage.
Playtime Is Over With the mixtape just celebrating its 15th year anniversary and being a common favorite amongst fans, a surprise performance of one the tracks would be a dream to say the least. Hearing a track like “40 bars” live alongside one of her most recent tracks from Queen would sum up the impact she has had on the culture and would be extremely reminiscent for the fans who have been rocking with her since ‘07.
We will soon see if any of these hopes are fulfilled as she takes the stage at Wireless and at the shows that are to follow.
One thing for certain is the Barbz will be celebrating after Minaj’s performance at the NO GHOSTWRITER Wireless Afterparty this Sunday at 10 pm in London. The event will be hosted by NO GHOSTWRITER’s Blessing Mukosha aka BIG MONEY B, with the help of DJ Chlxxe and guest DJ’s Janelle Wynter and Dirty Saints. It’s going to be a night filled with the best of Nicki Minaj and Female Rap so get your tickets!
Why is a collaboration with Nicki Minaj so important to newer Female Rappers, even in the second decade of her career? In this post Blessing Mukosha breaks it down.
