Doechii’s wig snatching BET performance

Doechii’s BET performance gave more impetus to the rising standard of female rap performances. The Tampa-born rapper performed her two recent hits, persuasive and crazy, snatching off her wig along with that of everyone who caught the show.

She wore a shimmering metallic suit while busting moves and rapping away around her all-female dance crew who dawned black leather leotards and high-heeled boots. The already top-tier, hyper-energy performance only gained more steam when Doechii snatched off her long-lengthened weave to usher in a more crazy vibe, if you know what I mean.

Her output, her flow, her moves, everything about her as well as everything around her just went up from 100 to 1000. Along with her dancers, the TDE artist embodied the song crazy and had the audience, more notable, Chloe and Halle Bailey moving along to the beat.

So how did the 22-year-old go from being an unemployed, struggling artist to setting the BET stage on fire?

Despite having a plethora of hits, not a lot of people knew who Doechii was before she got on that stage. She had several EPs and Mixtapes making the rounds before she struck gold with her 2020 smash hit “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake”. The track took over TikTok and had everyone waiting impatiently for the rap darling to give them more classics to express themselves through.

The hype around her grabbed the attention of TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) and she ended up signing under the label. She got to work and made more than enough noise.

She recently made XXL’s 2022 ‘freshman class’ along with rappers, Nardo Wick, SoFaygo, Babyface Ray, Big Scarr, Big30, Kali, KenTheMan, Cochise, KayCyy, Saucy Santana, and BabyTron. It’s one of hip-hop’s biggest accolades and her making the list is proof enough of her impact and influence.

To celebrate the class, every freshman flexes their skill through a 90-second freestyle, and let’s just say Doechii did not disappoint. She switched from one flow to the next while dropping hot bars at every turn. She most definitely made her mark. Before BET, the rapper was on one hell of a promotion tour for her two singles.

This saw her snatching hearts and blowing minds away on the Jimmy Fallon stage, giving her fans a glimpse of the fierce girl energy she brought to BET. She was also featured on David Guetta’s Trampoline along with rap legend, Missy Elliot, and ‘Whole Lotta Money’ rapper BIA.

This came as no surprise as Doechii’s style features a blend of hip-hop and house, something that resulted in her being compared to ‘212’ hitmaker Azealia Banks, something that is in my opinion, a compliment. Odd enough, when the rapper was asked to note her influences, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Tyler the creator, Beyonce, Lauryn Hill, and Outkast made the list with Ms Banks’ name unmentioned.

Whatever the case, Doechii is definitely next and we are here to watch her claim her place. We are ready for an album, a tour. Heck, we are ready for the rapper to take over the game at this point. She’s a breath of fresh air and she adds much needed diversity to commercial female rap.
